Coronado's Alina Molina looking to make a healthy comeback this season

Junior Alina Molina is one of the most seasoned basketball players on the Coronado High School girls basketball team’s roster. Stepping on the court at the age of nine, Molina spent a considerable amount of time hooping prior to her Islander days — but that experience comes with a price.

Since joining the Islander varsity squad as a freshman, Molina has succumbed to ankle injuries that sidelined her for the entire freshman season and parts of her sophomore campaign. According to the junior, who

Coronado boys hoops aim for CIF Division 2 title this season

The Coronado High School boys basketball team kicked off their long awaited season in mid-November with one goal: Winning the CIF Division 2 title.

The Islanders lost their opener, 71-66, to Steele Canyon, and the squad has a challenging pre-season schedule.

Coach Anthony Ott said his team understands what a fresh season brings.

“Our team has high expectations for the season,” said Ott. “Frankly, every game is important, and we will be best served taking the season one game at a time.”

Coronado girls hoops play hard in losses to higher division foes

The Coronado High School girls basketball team jump started their season with back-to-back road matchups on Nov. 15 and 16, against Pacific Ridge and Point Loma.

The Islanders, despite losing both games, held their own against two teams in higher divisions, according to head coach John Coolidge.

Coolidge said his team has already shown promising signs to begin the season, and their fight against higher division teams was encouraging to start the year.

Coronado girls hoops looking forward to new season

Backed by Coach John Coolidge, the Coronado High School girls basketball program is ramping up for its winter season.

The squad is coming off of a 1-18 season that saw the Islanders win their first game in two seasons in a thrilling victory over Castle Park High School.

While Coronado may not see Castle Park during this upcoming season, the team is in line for plenty of exciting match ups, Coolidge said. The team is 0-2 this season, but the Islanders were competitive in losses to Pacific Ridge

Angel Gomez: The youthful trailblazer of lawn bowling

Tucked next to the John D. Spreckels Center, which serves those 50 and older, the Coronado Lawn Bowling Club rarely attracts youngsters.

Given that the average age of a lawn bowler is 55, and known to be a sport of patience and precision, it’s not difficult to see why 18-year-old Angel Gomez may be an outlier.

Gomez, who grew up on the island and now studies at Point Loma Nazarene University, is the youngest certified coach for Bowls USA after getting certified before he could even register to

Gaining experience with each snap at Coronado High

Transitioning from Division IV to Division III in the ultra-competitive San Diego football scene is a hefty challenge.

And making this transition while sporting one of the youngest teams in the county is an entirely different beast.

Yet, Coronado High School, backed by sophomore quarterback Trey Arnold, is making the most of the promotion. The Islanders have started their stint in Division III with a 3-3 record, and it’s Arnold showing fans what is possibly yet to come for this young team.

Familiar faces make up a seasoned Coronado cross country squad

The Islander Cross Country program is cooking up something special this year, according to legendary Coach George Green—who’s entering his 33rd year at Coronado High School.

Green said the program often is too small to get a large enough group of runners who will be able to compete with bigger high schools.

This fall, however, he said there’s a shift in the wind for Coronado High School.

When looking over his rosters on the boys and girls teams, Green noted that the program has plenty of tale

Coronado eighth grader makes USA Water Polo Girl’s Cadet Team

In recent years there haven’t been many sports on the island that can keep up with the legacy Coronado water polo has built.

From CIF championships, to the hiring of a coach with decades of experience in Olympic competitions; water polo on Coronado continues to thrive.

However, the most recent water polo standout is a Coronado native who hasn’t even entered her high school years.

Meet Maggie Ryan, a 13-year-old eighth grader who is making a name for herself on the national stage.

The Coronado Lacrosse Club: A pipeline to success for Islanders

When it comes to high school girls lacrosse in greater San Diego, the Coronado Islanders are in the mix as one of the best teams in the area.

They belong in the Open Division—the best in San Diego—and narrowly lost to the No. 1 seed in the San Diego CIF Championship semifinals this spring.

So what’s the secret to the Islanders’ success?

Perhaps it’s because girls on the island are being taught lacrosse at a high level as early as kindergarten.

Coronado girls’ lacrosse season ends with CIF nailbiter

All eyes were fixated on a matchup between two of San Diego’s best girls’ lacrosse teams coming out of the CIF Open Division playoffs on May 16, when the fourth-seeded Coronado Islanders faced off against the top-seeded Torrey Pines Falcons.

The semifinal match was a highly anticipated rematch for two teams that hadn’t seen each other since late March, when the Islanders stole a game on the road by beating the Falcons 8-7.

However, it was the Falcons coming out on top this time around, securin

Coronado takes down La Jolla in first round of CIF girls lacrosse

Under the lights of Niedermeyer Field at Coronado High School, the girls’ lacrosse team took down the La Jolla Vikings 11-9, in the first round of the CIF San Diego Section Lacrosse Championship on May 11.

Entering the match, the Islanders sat at the fourth seed, and squeaked out a gritty win against the fifth-seeded Vikings.

Their first win of the tournament against league rivals did not come easy.

It was the Vikings who got out to a hot start—immediately putting Coronado on their heels.

Decorated Olympian Jesse Smith returns to coach Coronado High water polo

Jesse Smith, a five time Olympian and 2008 silver medalist, will be the new head coach of water polo at Coronado High School.

Coronado High School Athletic Director Robin Nixon recently made the announcement that Smith would take over a stacked program, including a girls squad that won back-to-back CIF championships.

Nixon said Coronado High School was thrilled to bring in someone with such an impressive background in water polo, but she said what’s more important are his ties to the school.

Coronado’s Liam Weaver has established himself as one of San Diego’s best golfers

Take a quick glance at the Western League for San Diego high school golf, and it’s mainly dominated by Cathedral Catholic and La Jolla high schools. The area’s top 10 golfers all attend those two schools—except for one.

This is where Coronado High School’s Liam Weaver enters the picture.

The junior, who leads the Division 3 Coronado Islanders golf team, is the lone wolf in a league that consists of some of San Diego’s best Division 1 and 2 golf programs.

Coronado High track and field passing the coaching torch

Coronado High School track and field is rooted in tradition.

Led by Coach George Green for over 25 years, the program has established a signature culture during Green’s historic tenure.

However, as Green looks to wind down his coaching career there is no indication that the standard of hard work this program holds itself to will waiver with the addition of a new coach.

Enter Cameron Gary, who is in his second season as head coach of the track and field team.

Lindsey Balsley has hurdled to the top of San Diego track

The Coronado High School track and field program is the definition of a young and fiery team.

Led by Coach Cameron Gary, in his second year as head coach, the Islanders only have four seniors on a team composed mostly underclassmen with a solid mix of juniors.

According to Gary, his program is poised for a huge season, with the young talent that has emerged.

And there is one Islander – Lindsey Balsley – who has made her name known locally after a breakout sophomore season.

Coronado boys tennis captain Ethan Harrington successful on the court and YouTube

Take a glance at the Coronado High School boys tennis team’s depth chart, and you’ll see one of the more well-rounded rosters in San Diego County.

Sitting in the second spot in the rotation is Ethan Harrington, a senior and team captain.

Born in La Jolla, but hailing from South Florida, Harrington moved to Coronado just before high school and has made an impact on the tennis team and musically.
